Sportsbook Bonuses Explained: Deposit Matches, Free Bets and Rollover

sports bettingbonusessportsbooks

Sportsbook welcome offers look simple, but the terms behind them decide whether you can ever withdraw the money. This guide explains the common types of sports bonus, the rules that come with them and how to work out what an offer is really worth.

Deposit match bonuses

The most common offer at US-friendly sportsbooks is a deposit match: deposit $100 with a 100% match and you get $100 in bonus funds. The bonus is locked until you meet the rollover (also called the wagering or playthrough requirement).

Rollover at sportsbooks is usually far lower than at casinos. A 10x requirement is common, compared with 30x–40x for casino bonuses. But check what it applies to:

  • Bonus only: 10x on a $100 bonus = $1,000 of bets.
  • Deposit plus bonus: 10x on $200 = $2,000 of bets.

Minimum odds

Almost every sports bonus sets a minimum price for qualifying bets, such as 1.5 in decimal odds (-200 American). Heavy favourites below that price don't count towards rollover. This stops bettors from clearing a bonus with near-certain bets.

Some offers also exclude bets on both sides of the same market, cashed-out bets and certain bet types, so read the list of what counts.

Free bets and bet credits

A free bet gives you a stake to place without using your own money. If it wins, you normally keep only the profit, not the stake. A $20 free bet at +100 returns $20 profit, not $40. Free bets are best used at slightly longer odds, where the profit is bigger relative to the stake.

Risk-free and second-chance bets

A "second-chance" bet refunds your first bet as bonus credit if it loses. The refund is usually a free bet or bonus with its own rollover, not cash. Treat these offers as a free bet that only appears if you lose.

Odds boosts and parlay insurance

Ongoing promotions include odds boosts (better prices on selected bets) and parlay insurance (a refund if one leg of a parlay loses). Odds boosts are often good value, because the price is genuinely better than normal. Parlay insurance is a sweetener, but parlays still carry a large built-in margin.

Worked example

Take a $100 deposit with a 125% match ($125 bonus), 10x rollover on deposit plus bonus, and minimum odds of 1.5:

  1. Total to wager: ($100 + $125) × 10 = $2,250.
  2. All bets must be at 1.5 or longer.
  3. Typical sportsbook margin is around 4–5% on standard markets, so the expected cost of $2,250 in bets is roughly $90–$115.
  4. That is still below the $125 bonus, so the offer has positive expected value if you play disciplined, single bets at fair prices.

Run the same sum for a casino bonus at 35x and you'll see why sports bonuses are usually easier to clear.

Common rules that catch bettors out

  • Time limits: many bonuses must be cleared within 30 days or less, after which the bonus and related winnings are removed.
  • Excluded bet types: cashed-out bets, voided bets and some live or prop markets may not count towards rollover.
  • Hedging: betting both sides of the same market to clear rollover is usually forbidden and can void the bonus.
  • Deposit turnover: some sportsbooks require you to bet your deposit at least once before withdrawing, with or without a bonus.
  • Maximum win: occasionally a bonus caps what you can win from it, especially with free bets.

Frequently asked questions

What is rollover on a sports bonus?

It is how much you must bet before bonus funds can be withdrawn. A 10x rollover on a $100 bonus means $1,000 of qualifying bets.

Do parlays count towards rollover?

Usually yes, as long as the combined odds meet the minimum. Some sportsbooks require each leg to meet the minimum odds as well.

Can I withdraw before finishing the rollover?

You can usually withdraw your own deposit, but the bonus and any winnings from it are forfeited.

Is it better to decline a sports bonus?

If you want to withdraw quickly or you bet mostly on heavy favourites below the minimum odds, playing without a bonus can be the better choice.
